Do you recommend using a geotextile fabric below the base material for a paver patio. And if so what type and thickness? Or can heavy landscape fabric work?

If it is a heavy clay soil and/or new construction house, yes. There are a number of woven geotextile fabrics that will work, such as Mirafi 500x or 600x. No NOT use landscape fabric, it just doesn't work like woven geotextile fabric.
PS - Don't forget to run the fabric up the sides and out of the excavation. You can trim off any excess after the pavement is complete.

It definitely won't hurt. Always make sure it is very taught, otherwise it is useless. Also, be sure not to let bobcat tire come in direct contact with the fabric.

Also, before you lay the fabric in the excavation, fill in any rut marks with some base material instead of putting soil back.

I use geotextile (keep it taught) on any staircase.

Geotextile is also necessary on flatter applications like patios and dirveways where the sub base is clay or silty. The geocloth keep the layers seperated.

I used geo on every job. It is so cheap and easy to install. When selling a job it sets you apart from the rest. People appreciate being informed of what your doing and why it is worth the extra money.
