Im a big fan of the mallets with different density pads on either side, and preferably the ones with replaceable pads, since they don't last more then a season usually. I know probst has one out called the Simplex Mallet (EH3026,EH3028, EH3027) that has various hardnesses available, but I find it seems sorta clunky personally. I buy the $21 dollar white/black padded one at home depot and just chew through a few each year. Sheer rubber mallets blow, and I usually end up knocking the entire head right off the post, and sand dead blows seem to have a limited life as well. The interchangable and replaceable striking heads are key, and can be custom tailored to your individual feel.
