Hello all,
Im new to the Forum. I want to see if anyone has any advice about a concern that im having lately. Some of my jobs have a white residue on them. this seems to be an intermittent problem. I have been telling my customers that this is a merely efflorescence that will wear in time, but im not convinced. The typical eff that I see is the white spots in the corners of the pavers, which is normal and wears reletively quickly, but the overall white haze is hit or miss. Im wondering if this is attributed to the sand im using, or settling sawdust that is not being carried away by the wind in some cases.
I would like to install with as less residue as possible.
My general install procedure:
Install inside pavers.
dry-fit and dry cut soldier course with cut saw.
concrete in all edges.
sweep most sawdust and cut pieces.
throw a little sand and spread around a bit.
compact everything.
more sand and sweep.
rinse thoroughly.
Could I be compacting the dust into the pores of the pavers?
Could the sand that im putting down as a pad before compacting be "sandpapering" the surface and jamming into the pores?
Is my final rinse watering the sawdust into the pores forming a catalyst and drying?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

This is a very technical subject as to the causes of efflorescence. But I have a few questions for you first.
You mention sawdust? Please explain your use of sawdust and the reason for it. Also you mention you concrete the edges. Do you mean you are using a concrete toe or something more eloborate? How long have you had these problems? Do you always get similar problems? Do you always use the same paver supplier? What part of the country are you from? What type of base material do you use? What type of bedding material do you set the pavers in?

If you can answer these questions I might be able to provide some answers.

Thanks for the reply,
Sawdust- from cutting pavers
Concrete- A buried "curb" under the soldier course, for edge restraint
Timeframe- off and on for the past few years.
Supplier(s)- 2 different locally
Base- Limestone "57 stone"
Bedding- Limestone "919 screening"
