I have been installing more and more natural stone, and it seems that what ever I put in the joints, just washes away. I have tried sand, which works good until the next storm or two. Putting sod down after filling the joints with soil doesn't seem to hold if the weather doesn't agree. Not to mention the awful mess it creates. And lastly, base material. Worked better than sand, but not much better.
The stone looks great, but I can't afford to keep going back to my old jobs. Any advice would be appreciated!

Try 1/4" chip and then wash coarse sand in to fill the voids

There is a product from Gator. They make poly sands and adhesives. They make a poly blended stone dust for natural walkways. They say it is good from 1/2" to 4" joints. i have not used it yet, so i cant say how it works, but i am definitely going to try it on the next natural stone job.
Answer is that any bnding agent other than cement and aggregates for large joints will not work. And if on a flexible system that will degrade in a few years too. Our Sandlock and other materials like polymers available to bind things get too soft when damp. The best answer is to use crushed clear rock/stone in a size range about ½ the depth of the entire joint and approx ½ the average joint width whichever is smaller. Then use a binder agent like Sandlock with a coarse sand to sweep the joints full. You want the joint to actually have some structure to it to withstand heels on womens shoes and little wheels from BBQ's and patio chair legs etc. There is no perfect solution to do a perfect job on wide joints. Best thing to do is to work very hard to keep joint widths as narrow as possible.

I have had extensive experience with this type of application. We have utilized the Envirobond Product line. They offer EnvirStone for just this application. It is offered in natural color and Granite (Charcoal) color. It works well. We have had jobs done with this for 3-4 years now and no call backs.
Sorry this is a bit late, but I just registered today.
